We visited three wine regions while in Spain: the Ribera del Duero, Rueda & The Rioja. All of them were spectacular and inspiring.
The Ribera looked like our own Snake River Valley, but with castles on the hilltops. Hot and arid, the Tempranillos we encountered from this region were rich and seductive. The Rueda was inspring because it delivered such expressive, crisp white wines in a region that was boiling hot during our stay.
We fell in love with the Verdejo grape and the refreshing wines that they made. We finished off our trip to the prestigious Rioja region and we were in awe of the endless acres of Tempranillo vineyards we encountered. There was much to see and learn while we stayed in the city of Haro and we were fortunate enough to be there for their Batalla de Vino (Wine Battle). Take a thousand Spaniards and let them party all night… then march up the mountain side in the morning and commence throwing wine on everyone in sight! We were there, we did it, and we snuck our 3 month old daughter, Charli Valentina, up the hill with us. Come visit the winery and we’ll show you photos of the event and Charli’s “wine stained onesie.” Go to Spain if you ever get the chance. The people, the food, the wine… all outstanding. We’ll be back. Salud!
