“2014 gave us an abundance of wonderful red wines and this first ever Reserve Merlot from the Dave Daniels vineyard is a perfect example of why I love the Small Lot Series.  As a winemaker you want to highlight different aspects of what Mother Nature gives you, and this wine is a beautiful snapshot of this classic vintage.

—Melanie Krause, Winemaker

The Vintage

The 2014 vintage in the Snake River Valley was strong for both red and white wines.  From the perspective of the winemaker, it was about as close to a perfect year as you can get!  There were plenty of warm days in mid-summer to ripen the grapes, but also a long, cool fall allowed for flavors to develop ahead of sugars. The growing season presented close to long-term averages with budbreak in mid-April, gradual warming in May and June, hot temperatures (90’s) in July and August, then cooling off to the 70’s and 80’s for September and October.

Tasting Notes

Fresh fruit aromas combine with sandlewood & leather notes to create a deeply layered wine.  A full bodied texture with a good amount of weight creates a full experience in the mouth, while the finish is long and lingering.

Production Notes

Hand harvested and fermented in 1 ton bins with 4 punch-downs per day. The grapes are pressed after 7 days of skin contact.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. Bottling took place after 16 months of aging in 50% new barrels, 15% 2nd and 3rd year barrels and 35% neutral barrels.
